Packing Tips for Moving Yourself
If you've decided to move yourself, use the following set of moving tips to assist you in packing your moving boxes correctly.
Tip #1
When packing moving boxes, the first step is getting the right moving supplies and you should get your moving supplies long before it is time for you to move. Moving supplies includes moving boxes, packing tape, scissors, a pen or marker, tissue paper, bubble wrap, and anything else you think you may need.
Tip #2
Start packing several weeks before your move, but make sure not to pack items you will need before the move. Pack each room separately, packing one area of the room at a time. Once a moving box is packed, close the box securely and label the box on the outside with a pen or marker. The label should say what the box contains and what room it came from or what room it will go to in the new place.
Tip #3
Always remember to put heavier items into the moving boxes first, and do not put things in with things that could crush them. You may want to draw arrows on the moving boxes showing which way should be kept pointing up, and write fragile on boxes containing breakable items. When unpacking, hold breakable items over the box, so if you drop them they will fall onto other packing material.
Tip #4
Wrap small items in bright tissue paper to prevent them from being thrown away with the moving supplies when you unpack. Carefully, wrap breakable items in bubble wrap, or, if you want to save space, you could also use towels to wrap items. Using newspaper is not recommended because the print could rub off and aside from being messy, it could soil valuable items.
Tip #5
If you are using a moving company, keep in mind that some household items are considered hazardous and moving companies will not move them. This may include things like nail polish, gasoline, paint, and cleaning fluids, so be sure to check with your moving company first.
Tip #6
Do not trust irreplaceable items to the movers. Things like jewelry, coin collections, important papers, photos, checks, and other valuables or sentimental things should be personally transported.
Tip #7
Make a complete and through list of everything that is being moved and take pictures or make videos of any unique or valuable items. You may want to write down the serial numbers from all electronic equipment you have as well. Put electronics and small appliances into their original boxes if you still have them, and secure the boxes with tape.
Follow these tips and packing should go smoothly and put you on your way to a successful move.
