Why Used Moving Boxes Aren't Ideal for Moving
If you're like a lot of people, you try to save time and money when moving, and one of the things you might consider is the use of used moving boxes.
There are a number of reasons why you may not want to do this. By using used moving boxes (such as liquor store boxes), it's possible to risk physical damage to your valuables. Moving boxes that are used over and over begin to lose strength with each move. You'll easily notice this when your cardboard moving boxes loses their stiffness, and the edges begin to loosen and tear. Have you ever had a moving box fall apart in the middle of a move, especially one filled with many smaller items? It's no fun, and it's the last thing you want to deal with when moving!
Another reason you may want to avoid used moving boxes (and this is probably one of the biggest reasons not to use them), is the likelihood of carrying bugs, bug eggs, and other nasty creatures to your new home. Let's face it, when you pick up second-hand moving boxes, they are likely to have been stored either outside, or in a dark, musty location - an ideal home for bugs, bugs, and more bugs! Transporting roaches, or roach eggs to your new and beautiful home is something you would probably like to avoid, right?
If you do plan to use used moving boxes, one of the most important things to look for is obviously its strength. Moving boxes that are flexible at the edges are probably a bit too worn out to be of much more use. Also, you'll want to make sure the box flaps are intact and sturdy as well. As a final check, make sure the bottom of the moving box is intact and sturdy as well. Although you can tape the worn out sides, it's better to not have to worry about these problems in the first place!
Of course, not all used moving boxes are the same. If you do happen to go this route, just make sure of the following:
Your used moving boxes have all of their flaps intact
The moving boxes haven't gotten wet previously (noticeable because of discoloration)
The edges are completely intact and haven't begun to separate
Your moving boxes haven't been stored in dark and moist places, making them breeding grounds for various bugs
The bottom of the moving boxes are still secure and tight
